Daily Journal of Bridge/Engine Watchkeeping Duties Frequently Asked Questions

There are a lot of confusions about the Daily Journal of Bridge/Engine Watchkeeping Duties especially at times of exceptional circumstances. In this article, I will tackle the frequently asked questions about the Daily Journal.

What is Daily Journal of Bridge/Engine Watchkeeping Duties?

Daily Journal of Bridge Watchkeeping Duties(DJBWD) and Daily Journal of Engine Watchkeeping Duties(DJEWD) were the two requirements MARINA added upon taking the OIC licensure exam. It is the documentation of activities undertaken during a BRIDGE or ENGINE ROOM watchkeeping duty.

Who are required to do and submit the Daily Journal?

As per Maritime Industry Authority
  • Candidates for licensure examinations are mandatorily required to submit their Daily Journal.
As of my understanding from the statements above, everyone including cadets, trainees and ratings must submit a Daily Journal if he/she wishes to take the Licensure Examination.

How many days of watchkeeping duties is required?

  • At least 180 days of watchkeeping duties or equivalent to six (6) months.
  • The required number of days is not necessarily in consecutive order. Accumulated days are acceptable.
So this means that you must do 180 pages of Daily Journal, it shouldn't be in consecutive days (i.e. Made one on Monday, Also did on Friday = 2 Days)

My watchkeeping duties is 8 hours, should I put 8 hours in the Daily Journal as well?

No, you just need to put 4 hours of BRIDGE or ENGINE watchkeeping duties

Is the Daily Journal the same with Training Record Book(TRB)?

No, they're two different documents. Only cadets shall do TRB.

I'm at gangway watch or any other watch except in the bridge/engine, can I fill up the Daily Journal?

No, You may only fill up the Daily Journal when you are at a BRIDGE or ENGINE watch.

Can I do the Daily Journal when in port/bay?

Yes for ENGINE WATCHKEEPING.
No for BRIDGE WATCHKEEPING.

I'm onboard and about to disembark, I was not aware of the Daily Journal so I missed of doing it. What should I do?

If you are to disembark before 2016, you have nothing to worry about. You may submit a certification of watchkeeping duties instead of the Daily Journal. For more details about this, read  Extending the Date for Acceptance of Certification and Other Documentary in Lieu of the Mandatory Submission of Daily Journal of Bridge/Engine Watchkeeping Duties..

Where can I buy a Daily Journal?

You can't buy one, it is prohibited to buy/sell. You must make one.
